Spot the Difference

I made this magazine game mockup as part of the marketing campaign for The Do's and Don'ts of Time Travel , a play about a young woman, Zoey, who repeatedly travels back in time to relive the two years leading up to her girlfriend’s death. A core theme of the show was that everything is slightly different each time you travel back in time. And with two actors playing Zoey, the idea of a “find the difference” puzzle made perfect and playful sense.

The design harkens back to magazine games of the 90’s, suggesting timelessness while also capitalizing on the returning fashion and aesthetic of the 90’s as well as its prevalence in the queer community.

The company’s Facebook caption reads, "In the course of our time travels, we stumbled upon this full page feature for The Do's and Don'ts of Time Travel . We're going to work on fixing some temporal paradoxes."

"Same shirt. Same shoes. Same soul. Or is it?" asks one of the Zoeys of the other when they meet. I had a great time using copy to leave Easter eggs like these so that audiences could continue their engagement with the story beyond the theater.
