Fahrenheit 451 Poster

For their third season, Quantum Dragon Theatre commissioned me to create posters in the style of old sci-fi paperbacks. I also wanted to sprinkle a bit of that old comic book aesthetic as well, so I made liberal use of halftones.

“We were born of fire, “ states Montag in this dystopian classic. I wanted to represent this in the illustration - a genderless, faceless flame. Is it of fire, or being consumed by it?

This is the messy garage where the concept is born. I sat down with the client as we talked through concepts and I narrated vague sketches as I laid them down. The client’s main desire was that they wanted to deviate from the traditional firefighter and books on fire imagery that most covers depict.

Once the client chose their favorite concepts, I fleshed them out. I was rooting for the flame creature from the top and was thrilled when it was selected.

Finally, I narrowed it down to two colorways for the client to choose from before adding copy to the poster.

The back of the show postcard. I wanted it to have a found feeling and a sense of being illicit to reflect the world of Fahrenheit 451.
